Stay Active, Healthy and Socialize

Physical activity is vital at any age, but as you grow older, changes set in that make exercise even more crucial. Conditions that typically develop with aging can be delayed when you stay active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that physical activity can even extend life expectancy. Although you should consult your doctor before starting any type of exercise regiment; there are things that you can do daily to keep yourself active mentally and physically. Here are a few

  1. Enjoy your retirement
  2. a) Start planning when you are still working. Think of activities, which you enjoy but had no time to do. For example, plan on how to rehabilitate your neglected garden.
    b) Take up hobbies, which are less strenuous like reading and which may have money-making possibilities like sewing, growing flowers, raising animals, cooking, and tutoring.
    c) Join social activities, which you can start in your active years and continue after you have retired.
  3. Enjoy an active social life

To stay healthy older persons should live life to the fullest – socialize because:

  1. a) An active social life will keep your system going. It presents physical and mental challenges to keep you lively,
    b) Humans are social beings, so stay tuned to the social life around you,
    c) Get in contact with other older persons of your community and organize groups with similar interest.
  2. Try to make your meals attractive

A balance nutritious diet helps maintain good health, fight infection, and prevent diseases. Three reasons why older persons should continue to balance their diet by eating lots of vegetables, fruits and low-fat meat or fish are;
a) Absorption in the gut becomes less attractive for some nutrients,
b) The immune system gets weaker and so needs more support through nutritious foods,
c) Chewing food may become more difficult, so older people need appropriate food for their bodily needs.

Meals can also be made attractive for older persons by;

  1. a) Finding food stores or markets where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and low-fat meats or fish.
    b) Being careful with storing food especially if you do not have a refrigerator. Eat leftovers from meals on the same day.
    c) Making your meals something to look forward to everyday and take time to prepare them.
    d) Finding new ways of combining food you like with new products you have heard of, Experimenting in your cooking.
    e) Using food with lots of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals to help prevent constipation.
  2. Stay mobile- Go out and enjoy life!

A lot of people are turned off by the “Day Care” part.  We don’t blame you.  After all day care is for children right?! It is place where children spend a few hours playing with their friends while they wait for mom or dad to pick them up and take them home.  Well we look at it this way… An adult day care is a place to spend time with some of your friends while you play dominoes, pool, perhaps a game of poker. It is a place where you can watch your favorite sports teams on our big screen televisions while you relax on our comfortable reclining chairs.  We are not trying to strip you of your independence; on the contrary we are trying to enhance it.

Lastly I want to say that Harmony at 154 isn’t only beneficial for the participant but for the care taker.  It provides the care taker respite from the duties they have to perform on a daily basis.  During this period of time the care taker has time to address personal errands resting assuredly that their loved one is being provided with the maximum in care.

Harmony Superstar

Many people tune in on a weekly basis to watch shows like “The Voice” or “American Idol” where talent from all over the US unite to win the ultimate title of being the next singing sensation.  All these people have one thing in common. They all want to be a Super Star!

Singing is just something everyone likes to do.  It is proven that singing aloud naturally makes you feel better.  I’ve tried it myself.  There have been times when I was feeling a little under the weather and just began singing along to one of my favorite songs in the car, and have felt significantly better.

Music is such a powerful thing.  Music has the power to change your mood, and here at Harmony we have adopted this concept. We put it to the test on a weekly basis.  We have noticed significant change in attitude, and outlook of our participants.  Instantly; one participant comes to mind. She joined our center with a diagnosis of chronic depression, and now she spends her days here with us dancing and singing to her favorite bachata songs.

On a weekly basis we have karaoke, and everybody loves it. Here we treat you like the superstar you really are. Sing anything from Anthony Santos to Smokey Robinson.  We have any and every song you may want to sing along to.  Maybe singing isn’t for you unless it is in the shower; our sound system and room acoustics will give you the reverb and tone that can make even a bad singer sound like Diana Ross.  The best thing about karaoke is that it’s just plain fun, and even more fun when done in a group.

Wii want to play

Let me take you back to the late 1940’s and 1950’s for a moment.  This is a beautiful era that even people born in a later era can appreciate.   Modern culture still has a fascination with the fads, crazes and pop sensations from the age when the whole family sat down for dinner every night and a car with fins could get you a date. But there was more to the 1950s than sock hops and drive-ins; some of the trends and social movements that came out of that decade, such as the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and the widespread adoption of TV, continue to shape our lives today. Rock music captivated the younger set, although their elders disapproved. Elvis Presley entered the living room through the Ed Sullivan variety show, which was broadcast in black and white. RCA first broadcast color television in June, 1951, but it was not yet available to the masses. “I Love Lucy,” “Leave It to Beaver,” and “The Twilight Zone” are examples of popular shows at the time. Children celebrated their birthdays with parties at skating rinks. Hula Hoops, Barbie dolls and electric train sets are representative toys of the 1950s. All ages enjoyed dancing and dancing lessons.

Many people took their entire families to drive-in movie theaters. Favorite films of the era included “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant”. Musicals such as “South Pacific” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds” were also hits. James Dean and Marilyn Monroe are iconic stars of the 50s. Children preferred the matinee westerns shown at local theaters starring Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. Much of the fun of the 1950s was family oriented and centered around the children of the post-war baby boom.  The point is people have always had different ways of entertaining themselves. Now in 2015; forms of entertainment have changed.  Although the concept remains the same;  the way to achieve “being entertained” has really changed.  With technological advancements and breakthroughs; people have found new ways to stay active and interactive.  One of those ways is through a video game consul known as the Nintendo Wii. Senior citizens and children can agree that Nintendo Wii is just a whole lot of fun.

Our participants really enjoy playing wii bowling on our wall size big screen.  Along with wii bowling we also have wii golf, wii tennis, and other enjoyable games that make time fly by.  The Nintendo Wii requires you to use your body as the controller for the game.  You’re not just sitting in one spot staring at a screen.  Instead, you are the player in the game.  This not only provides entertainment, but it also provides and promotes better blood circulation, and overall health.  It is really easy to play. Many people are turned off to learning new things because they fear that it will be too difficult, but our staff here at Harmony at 154th street will walk you through the simple process.  We know that once you get the hang of it you’re not going to stop playing.

Pool Shark Attack

Good Day Everyone! We have made it yet through another week.  Since our last blog a lot has been happening at Harmony at 154th. The fun just keeps on happening here.  For the next few minutes please indulge me as I focus on one of the many activities we have here at Harmony at 154th.  Personally it’s one of my favorite things to do here, and that is billiards.  As soon as you enter our dual floor state of the art facility there it is; our pool table.  We didn’t coincidentally place our pool table at the mere entrance of our main hall for no reason.  We know how much people love to play pool.  Quite honestly playing pool is my favorite thing to do here (although I get my behind kicked by the many pool sharks at our facility) it makes me wish that I was eligible to become a participant myself, so that I can play every day and become a pool shark myself. I like to think that I’m a shark in the making.

Well, we are calling all pool sharks to come to Harmony and show us what they’re made of.  In the past we’ve had pool tournaments and we’ve seen some of the biggest sharks I’ve ever seen.  We are still looking for the proverbial Steven Spielberg Jaws of the pool world.  Is it you?! Well it can be, but if you find yourself to be more of a guppy (like me) here are a few tips to help you get to shark status.

1. Work on Your Form

Proper form is one of the many important parts of pool that many novice players overlook. One of the most important things that you need to focus on is keeping your neck straight, for example. Keeping your neck straight will give you the proper amount of perspective that you need to be able to visualize exactly where the ball is going to go before you strike it.

You’ll also want to secure your bridge hand, which will help you execute a wider array of shots with maximum efficiency. Finally, you’ll want to keep your backswing smooth and slow to help yourself stay coordinated while taking shots.

2. Learn From Your Mistakes

One of the most important things that a person can do in life is learn from his or her mistakes. This advice goes for all aspects of life, from your personal life to your professional life and even to the world of pool. If you consistently miss the same type of shot or freeze up in the same situation, take the time to stop and think about what is happening.

If you always approach a shot from the wrong angle, identify your weak points and learn how to turn them into positive attributes. Doing so will help make sure you’re ready for any event that is likely to happen and you won’t make these same types of mistakes again.

3. Always Stay Relaxed

Staying as comfortable as possible is one of the key parts to success in many different forms of life.

When you start to get uncomfortable and begin to stress out, you are more likely to make quick decisions just to get yourself out of a certain type of situation.

If you don’t leave yourself the proper amount of time to think things through before you move forward with your actions, you are much more likely to make a mistake.

The same is true in pool. Always make sure that you’re staying as calm as possible and that you’re giving yourself the appropriate amount of time necessary to make the best possible strategic decisions.

4. Look at the Entire Table

Adult Day Care Activities Bronx, One of the most important things that you can do in pool is walk around the entire table and strategize before you make your shot. Playing pool on a professional level is a lot like playing chess. You shouldn’t just be thinking about the move you want to make.

You need to be thinking about the next three moves that you’ll make, as well as the moves your opponent will make, before you move forward. Taking a look at the entire table will allow you to do that, because you’ll be able to see the ramifications from the shot you’re thinking of making.

5. Don’t Get Fancy

When you watch pool professionals play on television, you are likely to see people making “trick shots” and doing other types of flashy moves to get attention while they’re winning. Keep in mind that in the world of professional pool, these types of actions are exceedingly rare. When you start trying to make “trick shots” is when you start slipping up and making mistakes.

The people on television are only making these types of moves because they’re on television and they know that millions of people could be watching. You’re not on television, so relax and take your time.

6. Never Forget Your Opponent

One of the most interesting aspects of the game of pool is how a decision that you make directly influences the decision your opponent has to make. The game is much more focused on strategy than a lot of people realize. Right before you take a shot, always stop to think about what your opponent will be forced to do next.

Even if you sink a ball, for example, you could be setting them up for an even better shot. Likewise, it may be better to pass up on that easy shot if you can block your opponent’s next move in the process.

7. Practice makes perfect

Though it should go without saying, the idea that you can’t play pool like a professional without a great deal of practice bears repeating.

Practice makes perfect in nearly all aspects of life, but it is especially true when it comes to the world of professional sports.

When you watch a professional play pool, you aren’t watching someone who is picking up a cue for the first time.

You aren’t watching someone who plays casually with friends a few times a month. You’re watching someone who has practiced for hundreds of hours before they ever set foot near that professional table.

Bloom into a social butterfly

Happy Spring everyone!  I know that many of you are happy to see the winter and all its snow leave.  Now that you have survived winter in NYC; we have spring to look forward to.  Spring; of course notorious for runny noses, and itchy eyes for some; also comes with nature’s full display of beauty.  The flowers are blooming, the trees are budding, and the birds are chirping.

The winter wasn’t all bad though.  Over the winter Harmony at 154th has grown in numbers.  More people have visited our center, and have made the decision themselves to become a participant here at Harmony.  This place is undeniably a happy place to be.  We have seen a few of our participants come in with depression problems, and have now made a complete turnaround.  We have seen many of our participants bloom into social butterflies.  You can do the same! You may be filling a void in your life that perhaps hinders you from stepping out and live the life you want to live.  We strongly believe that Harmony at 154th is the answer.  Here you will meet people just like you who are already living life to the fullest.

We offer something for everyone.  This past week we celebrated our Spring Fling Party here at Harmony at 154thpersonal home care bronx. The outcome was amazing.  Many people went home with awesome bingo prizes, and other gifts.  There was dancing and singing involved, and of course delicious food which everyone enjoyed.  To top it off; we all had some cake as a treat, because what’s a party without cake.  We have many different activities coming up which I will be mentioning in future blogs.

All walks of life

I hope that as you read this your year has kicked off to a great one for all of you.  I have a good feeling that this year is going to be a great year for the city of New York.  I’m happy to call myself a New Yorker who has served this city and state to the best of my ability.  I have held many jobs and positions in my 29 years of life from porter to paramedic; from musician to marketer.  All these things have taught me something about life.  Life continues to be a learning experience no matter how old you are.  At our center Harmony at 154th; we have all kind of people that have come from all walks of life, but have one thing in common.

One of our participants is an ex judge.  You would think that she would be this serious person who just sits in our center and doesn’t talk to anyone.  She is quite the opposite.  You should hear her sing karaoke, and dance merengue.  She is the life of the party, and is a very approachable person.  We have a woman that comes to our center who is a great grandmother.  She has well over 30 grand children and 40 great grand children.  She grew up in the Dominican Republic where she raised her children all by herself from an early age, because her husband died at an early age.  She tells stories of how hard it was to raise 13 kids by herself.  Her story is truly inspiring.  She is a woman of much wisdom, but also one of the funniest participants we have. Harmony social adult day care at 154th has a participant who was a civil rights activist back in the times of apartheid.  She marched down Washington DC and was a demonstrator against racism and segregation. She now carries her leadership qualities into Harmony at 154th by being one of the first participants we ever had.  She didn’t need a full center to see why Harmony at 154th is the place to be.  She is personally one of my favorite participants to be around. She may be 65 but has the energy of a 30 year old.   At Harmony at 154th we also have an ex lawyer who is still very much with it.  He is a great conversationalist, and has many interesting stories to share.  This is a person who has overcome many things in his life, and shares these experiences with everyone at Harmony  home care in ny .  Finally we have a participant who is a survival of domestic abuse and cancer.  She’s an inspiration to everyone battling with household problems or an illness.  She is also one of the most outgoing persons at Harmony at 154th.  She has not allowed her past determine who she is now.

What do all these people have in common?  The answer is Harmony at 154th. The Comfort Zone

Happy New Year Everyone!  We have made it to a new year, and there is nothing stopping us from becoming who we were made to be.  Nothing stopping us but ourselves I should say.  A few months ago I wrote a blog called “What are you afraid of?”  This blog challenged the reader to not be afraid of making new steps in life with the goal of bettering themselves.  Unfortunately, some of you are still scared of what might happen if you stepped out of your comfort zone.  From experience; do you know what makes life worth living?  Taking chances! We take chances every day, and we don’t even realize it.  A simple example is when we eat.  There is a chance that you might choke on cheeseburger you are consuming; yet we still eat it because we hope for the best, and it tastes good.  Other people play the lottery and invest money with the hope of getting rich, or winning a little extra pocket cash.  Chances are a part of life, but it seems like we don’t mind taking chances that bring us satisfaction.  So; let me present you with a chance that will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  Ready?..

Step out of your house.

Many people love staying home.  It is where we feel most comfortable, but if you live by yourself; as I do; you know how lonely it can get in there after a while.  What I do is step out of my house and find something productive to do.  This year flew by for me personally and that is because I kept myself busy.  Sadly many people (in specific the geriatric population) stay confined to their homes.  This is many times a product of depression caused by a loss in the family, or illness.  Many elderly people feel like their life has ended and they are no longer good for anything.  This is NOT true.  Harmony Social Adult Day strives to putting this flat out lie to rest once and for all by proving that life still goes on even in the golden years.  They are called golden years for a reason.  This time should be treasured because it is most valuable.  At Harmony Social Adult Day Care at 154th we want to see you shine like the gold that you are.  We want the latter years to be full of vibrant experiences that can stimulate and awaken the youth in all of us.

Caroling in perfect Harmony

In my 30 years of life I have only gone caroling once for the holidays.  I was maybe 11 or 12 when my church group decided to go door to door singing Christmas classics. We started by visiting people we knew and worked our way to the homes of strangers.  There are two things I remember about that day one I was cold and two I was embarrassed.  After all I was obliged to participate.  All my friends were going and I didn’t want them to look at me like a Debbie downer.  Caroling is something that is no longer seen; at least not in the metropolis known as New York City.  The truth is that the times are bad and going door to door isn’t advised.  Back in the 90’s we were with a large group of people under much supervision.

Caroling began back in the 19th century, and its original intent was not confined to Christmas songs alone.  Caroling involved a group of people going door to door at anytime of the year to sing to the residents of that town.  In spite of being frozen and a little embarrassed on the day that I went; I was overtaken by two things, and that was the joy that we evidently brought to the families we visited and that we all sang in perfect Harmony although we weren’t all singers.

At our center Harmony Social Adult Day Care Bronx, we are keeping this tradition alive by singing along to your favorite Christmas songs.  One of the many things we do here at Harmony is sing-alongs/karaoke.  I can honestly say that sing alongs and karaoke is one of our participant’s favorites.  Studies prove that singing aloud naturally changes your mood by making you happier.  Try it!
