What are you afraid of?

There is no doubt that October is many people’s favorite month.  After a hot summer; the cool crisp air is a big relief for many. This is jean jacket/light sweater weather.  Many people love October for the walks in the park as they fall in love with the color changing foliage.  Other people love October for the fashion that comes along with autumn. Many like this season because it is pumpkin pie season! I must admit October is my favorite month.  It’s heaven on earth. It’s around this time we start seeing the department stores selling Halloween costumes and decorations. People begin stocking up on candy for the trick-or-treaters. This time is fun for many people. But since we are on the topic of Halloween; I ask you the reader; what are you afraid of?  While many are afraid of the dark, spiders, and snakes; others are more afraid of being alone.  Honestly isolation isn’t some fictitious thing such as Frankenstein. It is a real occurrence that many times leads to depression.  You may be one of those people that feel alone and hopeless.  You or someone you know may be confined to their homes without any human interaction; let alone physical or mental stimulation. Luckily, there is a way out.

Harmony at 154th Social Adult Day Care located at 367 East 154th Street, Bronx, NY, 10455 is that way out.  We are a center that provides everything that you need.  We offer a number of activities here to keep you happy and healthy mentally and physically.  If you like music we offer musical entertainment, and sing-alongs.  Are you a movie enthusiast? Come watch your favorite movies on any of our 8 big screen televisions with surround sound.  You will never be bored at Harmony at 154th. We have bingo, chess, card games, and checker games. Come shoot some pool with us in our main hall. We keep you active by providing daily exercise through zumba sessions, tai-chi, and self defense classes. We offer art and computer classes here as well.  You’ll never be hungry while you’re at Harmony at 154th because we offer a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks on a daily basis. If you don’t feel like doing anything on any given day just come and relax in our relax room, or sit down in our library and read your favorite book.  There is so much more to do here. This is just some of our activities.

Yet even with all these exciting things many people are scared to join a social adult day care. Many people think that joining a center would mean the loss of independence, but this is an erroneous concept.  As a matter of fact our program is here to keep you independent for as long as possible. Others are afraid that joining this program will take away other services that they have such as medications, doctor’s appointments and etc.  Enrolling in a social adult day care will not strip you of any services you are already receiving.  Social Adult Day Care is an ancillary service that you can benefit from.  I’ve also heard people say that they are afraid to join because they receive home care, and they don’t want to lose their home attendant.  Enrolling in a social adult day care does not take away your home attendant.  Having home care is actually required to be a part of a social adult day care.  Finally I have heard people say “I love the idea of your center but I don’t want a home attendant.”  We understand we can’t force any service upon you which is why we offer affordable pricing to be part of Harmony at 154th.  Look at it as a club you have to pay to be a part of.  If you don’t have a home attendant, but feel like you need one; we help you with obtaining one. This past Saturday September 27, 2014, Harmony at 154th celebrated their Grand Opening, and quite honestly the support from the community was tremendous! Our center was full with people having a good time.  We ran out of food at one point and had to order more.  This for us was a good thing, because it means that our expectations were exceeded. After visiting our center there was no denying that Harmony at 154th was the place to be.  We had music, dancing, food, zumba, and vendors providing the community with giveaways and information on their services. The best thing of it all is that Harmony at 154th was filled with laughter, family, and good energy. Don’t fossilize! Socialize!

Ever been to a museum? My favorite is the museum of natural history in New York City.  When you walk in there you are immediately transported into a different world that varies from room to room and exhibit to exhibit.  Although a trip to the museum is always fun and educational you will never find a living breathing dinosaur there, and thank goodness for that.  Unlike Shawn Levy’s movie “Night at the Museum;” starring Ben Stiller nothing comes to life at the museum.  Our lives should not be a museum.  No matter what age you are it is important to stay active and socialize with other people.

Physical activity is vital at any age, but as you grow older, changes set in that make exercise even more crucial. Conditions that typically develop with aging can be delayed when you stay active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that physical activity can even extend life expectancy. Although you should consult your doctor before starting any type of exercise regiment; there are things that you can do daily to keep yourself active mentally and physically. Here are a few

  1. 1.       Enjoy your retirement

a)      Start planning when you are still working. Think of activities, which you enjoy but had no time to do. For example, plan on how to rehabilitate your neglected garden,
b) Take up hobbies, which are less strenuous like reading and which may have money-making possibilities like sewing, growing flowers, raising animals, cooking, and tutoring.
c) Join social activities, which you can start in your active years and continue after you have retired.

  1. 2.       Enjoy an active social life

To stay healthy older persons should live life to the fullest – socialize because:

a)      An active social life will keep your system going. It presents physical and mental challenges to keep you lively,
b) Humans are social beings, so stay tuned to the social life around you,
c) Get in contact with other older persons of your community and organize groups with similar interest.

  1. 3.       Try to make your meals attractive

A balance nutritious diet helps maintain good health, fight infection, and prevent diseases. Three reasons why older persons should continue to balance their diet by eating lots of vegetables, fruits and low-fat meat or fish are;
a) Absorption in the gut becomes less attractive for some nutrients,
b) The immune system gets weaker and so needs more support through nutritious foods,
c) Chewing food may become more difficult, so older people need appropriate food for their bodily needs.

Meals can also be made attractive for older persons by;

a) Finding food stores or markets where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and low-fat meats or fish,
b) Being careful with storing food especially if you do not have a refrigerator. Eat leftovers from meals on the same day,
c) Making your meals something to look forward to everyday and take time to prepare them,
d) Finding new ways of combining food you like with new products you have heard of. Experimenting in your cooking,
e) Using food with lots of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals to help prevent constipation.

  1. 4.       Stay mobile- Go out and enjoy life!

A lot of people are turned off by the “Day Care” part.  We don’t blame you.  After all day care is for children right?! It is place where children spend a few hours playing with their friends while they wait for mom or dad to pick them up and take them home.  Well look at it this way… When I was a child I enjoyed playing with GI Joe action figures. They were my favorite toys when I was young.  As I grew older I no longer played with GI Joe action figures, but instead I started to play the guitar.  Now that’s my favorite toy.  An adult day care is a place to spend time with some of your friends while you play dominoes, pool, perhaps a game of poker. It is a place where you can watch your favorite sports teams on our big screen televisions while you relax on our comfortable reclining chairs.  We are not trying to strip you of your independence; on the contrary we are trying to enhance it.

Lastly I want to say that Harmony at 154 isn’t only beneficial for the participant but for the care taker.  It provides the care taker respite from the duties they have to perform on a daily basis.  During this period of time the care taker has time to address personal errands resting assuredly that their loved one is being provided with the maximum in care.
