Harmony Superstar

Many people tune in on a weekly basis to watch shows like “The Voice” or “American Idol” where talent from all over the US unite to win the ultimate title of being the next singing sensation.  All these people have one thing in common. They all want to be a Super Star!

Singing is just something everyone likes to do.  It is proven that singing aloud naturally makes you feel better.  I’ve tried it myself.  There have been times when I was feeling a little under the weather and just began singing along to one of my favorite songs in the car, and have felt significantly better.

Music is such a powerful thing.  Music has the power to change your mood, and here at Harmony we have adopted this concept. We put it to the test on a weekly basis.  We have noticed significant change in attitude, and outlook of our participants.  Instantly; one participant comes to mind. She joined our center with a diagnosis of chronic depression, and now she spends her days here with us dancing and singing to her favorite bachata songs.

On a weekly basis we have karaoke, and everybody loves it. Here we treat you like the superstar you really are. Sing anything from Anthony Santos to Smokey Robinson.  We have any and every song you may want to sing along to.  Maybe singing isn’t for you unless it is in the shower; our sound system and room acoustics will give you the reverb and tone that can make even a bad singer sound like Diana Ross.  The best thing about karaoke is that it’s just plain fun, and even more fun when done in a group.

Perhaps this sounds like something that you would like for yourself or a loved one.  Spending too much time at home isn’t good for anyone.  Mental and physical stimulus is very important to overall health.  At Harmony at 154th we help you stay active and independent longer. We also keep you healthy longer through fun and interactive activities.

If you want to try us out before making your decision you definitely can. We offer free one day passes to the center where you can enjoy different activities and rooms such as the cyber room, or relax room.  We provide free door to door transportation so call us today and speak with David  to set up a day to visit.  You won’t regret it. See you soon.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Music to our ears

Music is an international language.  It is such a powerful tool that brings people together.  Every decade had its best artists.  In this blog I want to concentrate on three decades, and henceforth take you on a nostalgic trip back in time to one of the best artists of the 1940’s.

Count Basie

Music in the 1940s was mainly built around the jazz and big band styles that were popular during the day. Artists like Rosemary Clooney, and Artie Shaw helped to define the musical era with their unique brand of entertaining crowds through their music.   William James “Count” Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. His mother taught him to play the piano and he started performing in his teens. Dropping out of school, he learned to operate lights for vaudeville and to improvise accompaniment for silent films at a local movie theater in his home town of Red Bank, New Jersey. By 16 he increasingly played jazz piano at parties, resorts and other venues. In 1924 he went to Harlem, where his performing career expanded; he toured with groups to the major jazz cities of Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. In 1929 he joined Bennie Moten‘s band in Kansas City, and played with them until Moten’s death in 1935.

That year Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two “split” tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. Many musicians came to prominence under his direction, including the tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, the guitarist Freddie Green, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry “Sweets” Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Basie’s theme songs were “One O’Clock Jump“, developed in 1935 in the early days of his band, and later “April in Paris“.

William Basie was born to Harvey Lee and Lillian Basie in Red Bank, New Jersey.  His father worked as a coachman and caretaker for a wealthy judge. After automobiles replaced horses, his father became a groundskeeper and handyman for several wealthy families in the area.  Both of his parents had some type of musical background. His father played the mellophone, and his mother played the piano; in fact, she gave Basie his first piano lessons. She took in laundry and baked cakes for sale for a living. She paid 25 cents a lesson for piano instruction for him.

Not much of a student in school, Basie dreamed of a traveling life, inspired by touring carnivals which came to town. He finished junior high schoolbut spent much of his time at the Palace Theater in Red Bank, where doing occasional chores gained him free admission to performances. He quickly learned to improvise music appropriate to the acts and the silent movies.

Though a natural at the piano, Basie preferred drums. Discouraged by the obvious talents of Sonny Greer, who also lived in Red Bank and became Duke Ellington‘s drummer in 1919, Basie at age 15 switched to piano exclusively.  Greer and Basie played together in venues until Greer set out on his professional career. By then, Basie was playing with pick-up groups for dances, resorts, and amateur shows, including Harry Richardson’s “Kings of Syncopation”.  When not playing a gig, he hung out at the local pool hall with other musicians, where he picked up on upcoming play dates and gossip. He got some jobs in Asbury Park at the Jersey Shore, and played at the Hong Kong Inn until a better player took his place.

Count Basie’s music is timeless here at Harmony at 154th Street.  Besides providing pre-recorded music from great artists of that time, and other eras; we also provide live musical entertainment.  Many people who attend our center love the live entertainment/sing along aspect of our center.  It is scientifically proven that singing out loud makes you feel emotionally, physically, and mentally better.  As I mentioned at the beginning of this; music is a powerful tool, and we take full advantage of it here in Harmony at 154th Street. Come join us and bring music to our ears!

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. All walks of life

I hope that as you read this your year has kicked off to a great one for all of you.  I have a good feeling that this year is going to be a great year for the city of New York.  I’m happy to call myself a New Yorker who has served this city and state to the best of my ability.  I have held many jobs and positions in my 29 years of life from porter to paramedic; from musician to marketer.  All these things have taught me something about life.  Life continues to be a learning experience no matter how old you are.  At our center Harmony at 154th; we have all kind of people that have come from all walks of life, but have one thing in common.

One of our participants is an ex judge.  You would think that she would be this serious person who just sits in our center and doesn’t talk to anyone.  She is quite the opposite.  You should hear her sing karaoke, and dance merengue.  She is the life of the party, and is a very approachable person.  We have a woman that comes to our center who is a great grandmother.  She has well over 30 grand children and 40 great grand children.  She grew up in the Dominican Republic where she raised her children all by herself from an early age, because her husband died at an early age.  She tells stories of how hard it was to raise 13 kids by herself.  Her story is truly inspiring.  She is a woman of much wisdom, but also one of the funniest participants we have. Harmony social adult day care at 154th has a participant who was a civil rights activist back in the times of apartheid.  She marched down Washington DC and was a demonstrator against racism and segregation. She now carries her leadership qualities into Harmony at 154th by being one of the first participants we ever had.  She didn’t need a full center to see why Harmony at 154th is the place to be.  She is personally one of my favorite participants to be around. She may be 65 but has the energy of a 30 year old.   At Harmony at 154th we also have an ex lawyer who is still very much with it.  He is a great conversationalist, and has many interesting stories to share.  This is a person who has overcome many things in his life, and shares these experiences with everyone at Harmony  home care in ny .  Finally we have a participant who is a survival of domestic abuse and cancer.  She’s an inspiration to everyone battling with household problems or an illness.  She is also one of the most outgoing persons at Harmony at 154th.  She has not allowed her past determine who she is now.

What do all these people have in common?  The answer is Harmony at 154th. They all made the choice to make Harmony at 154th the place where they will maintain or even improve their independence and vitality.  Harmony at 154th is more than just pool tables, and exercise, free breakfast and lunch, and bingo.  Harmony at 154th offers something more valuable than money.  We offer health; mental and physical well-being.  Our program keeps you away from inactivity which can lead to institutionalization in a nursing home or other skilled nursing facilities.  No matter where you came from, or what your story is; there’s a place for you at Harmony adult day care bronx at 154th.  Join a group of people that have said yes to increased independence, and better health.  Join a remarkable group of people who are just like you.  Call us today!

The Comfort Zone

Happy New Year Everyone!  We have made it to a new year, and there is nothing stopping us from becoming who we were made to be.  Nothing stopping us but ourselves I should say.  A few months ago I wrote a blog called “What are you afraid of?”  This blog challenged the reader to not be afraid of making new steps in life with the goal of bettering themselves.  Unfortunately, some of you are still scared of what might happen if you stepped out of your comfort zone.  From experience; do you know what makes life worth living?  Taking chances! We take chances every day, and we don’t even realize it.  A simple example is when we eat.  There is a chance that you might choke on cheeseburger you are consuming; yet we still eat it because we hope for the best, and it tastes good.  Other people play the lottery and invest money with the hope of getting rich, or winning a little extra pocket cash.  Chances are a part of life, but it seems like we don’t mind taking chances that bring us satisfaction.  So; let me present you with a chance that will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  Ready?..

Step out of your house.

Many people love staying home.  It is where we feel most comfortable, but if you live by yourself; as I do; you know how lonely it can get in there after a while.  What I do is step out of my house and find something productive to do.  This year flew by for me personally and that is because I kept myself busy.  Sadly many people (in specific the geriatric population) stay confined to their homes.  This is many times a product of depression caused by a loss in the family, or illness.  Many elderly people feel like their life has ended and they are no longer good for anything.  This is NOT true.  Harmony Social Adult Day strives to putting this flat out lie to rest once and for all by proving that life still goes on even in the golden years.  They are called golden years for a reason.  This time should be treasured because it is most valuable.  At Harmony Social Adult Day Care at 154th we want to see you shine like the gold that you are.  We want the latter years to be full of vibrant experiences that can stimulate and awaken the youth in all of us.

You can take many anti-depressive meds that have proven to be effective, but is this how you want to live? Taking anti-depressive meds for the rest of your life is not something you should settle for.  Fight this the natural way, and that is by becoming a participant at Harmony Adult Day Care.  Why Harmony at 154th? Because I strongly believe that our staff is unique.  Our staff has a way of reaching our participants in ways that cannot be obtained through meds alone.  We have noticed a significant change in the overall outlook of life in our participants.  Our interest lies in getting to know you and in giving you an amazing 8 hours a day.  Here at Harmony  health home care bronx at 154th you will meet other people that come from all walks of life, but that have one thing in common and that is that they all have decided to step out of their comfort zones and try out social adult day care.  Programs like Harmony at 154th have proven to change people’s frowns into permanent smiles, so allow us to do the same with you and/or your loved ones.  So take the chance many have already taken, but none have regretted.  Come to Harmony Social Adult Day Care. We believe that one day with us will kick off a change within you for a better, happier you.  Call us today and fill your new year with laughter and smiles.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Sweet Christmas

Sweet Christmas!

The holidays are many people’s favorite time of the year.  Andy Williams thought so when he sang “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”  It can also be a hectic time for many with all the shopping, and cooking.  If you’re anything like me; you do your shopping on the 24th; shame on us.  It’s hard to sometimes figure out what to get certain people in our lives too.  Many of us just opt out of the stress and get gift cards for everyone.  One thing that we all have in common (well at least most of us) is that we all love snickerdoodle cookies, sugar cookies, and ginger bread man cookies.  Many people get careless and go all out eating sweets, and other foods that aren’t good if you have diabetes.

Diabetes doesn’t magically disappear during the holidays.  It never takes a vacation or a break.  There are many ways to control it although.  There are also many other alternatives to conventional foods to make them diabetes friendly.  In this blog we want to share some of our favorite diabetes friendly desserts that you can make this year that are still very delicious.

PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

The perfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter gives these brownies a rich taste for only about 150 calories per serving.

 APPLE SPICE CAKE

This is the perfect warm comfort dessert. A dollop of whipped topping and a sprinkle of cinnamon finish off the look.

PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE IN GINGERSNAP CRUST

Who says that pumpkin season has to end in November.  Indulge yourself with a slice of this decadent pumpkin cheesecake, and serve it at your next family gathering.  This is a dessert that is sure to impress.

GINGERBREAD MAN COOKIES

Without a doubt this is a holiday favorite.  At only 73 calories per serving; you can enjoy these decadent sweet ginger men.

Many people stay away from sweets altogether.  Sweets are a part of life.  Nothing is truly bad if eaten in moderation.  Just because these are diabetic friendly treats it does not mean that you should overdue it.  Know your limits! At Harmony Social Adult Day Care Bronx, we love sweets! Allow us to take care of your family with diabetes.  Our staff is trained to remind your loved ones to take their insulin, and other medications.  Our staff will monitor the food that your loved one consumes, so that blood glucose levels remain at a healthy level.  Call us today and make this Christmas a sweet one! Come and learn how to make any of these treats and more during our baking demonstrations at Harmony Social Adult Day Care.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Caroling in perfect Harmony

In my 30 years of life I have only gone caroling once for the holidays.  I was maybe 11 or 12 when my church group decided to go door to door singing Christmas classics. We started by visiting people we knew and worked our way to the homes of strangers.  There are two things I remember about that day one I was cold and two I was embarrassed.  After all I was obliged to participate.  All my friends were going and I didn’t want them to look at me like a Debbie downer.  Caroling is something that is no longer seen; at least not in the metropolis known as New York City.  The truth is that the times are bad and going door to door isn’t advised.  Back in the 90’s we were with a large group of people under much supervision.

Caroling began back in the 19th century, and its original intent was not confined to Christmas songs alone.  Caroling involved a group of people going door to door at anytime of the year to sing to the residents of that town.  In spite of being frozen and a little embarrassed on the day that I went; I was overtaken by two things, and that was the joy that we evidently brought to the families we visited and that we all sang in perfect Harmony although we weren’t all singers.

At our center Harmony Social Adult Day Care Bronx, we are keeping this tradition alive by singing along to your favorite Christmas songs.  One of the many things we do here at Harmony is sing-alongs/karaoke.  I can honestly say that sing alongs and karaoke is one of our participant’s favorites.  Studies prove that singing aloud naturally changes your mood by making you happier.  Try it! Next time you’re feeling down or if you’re upset.  Personally it has worked for me.  Harmony at 154th street’s goal is to keep you happy and healthy.  We are sure that singing along to one of your favorite songs will drastically improve your mood.  Staying home, enclosed within 4 walls is not going to make anything better.  Come to Harmony and socialize with people that are just like you.  Just like my friends, and me we weren’t all singers, but we all sang in perfect harmony on that night.  Our participants are from different walks of life but when we come together it’s perfect.  Harmony at 154th is proud to say that we are more than just another center… We are your family away from home.  Whether you’re a singer or not; there is an activity for anything you fancy to drastically change your outlook on life.

Join us today, and be part of a growing community that refuses to succumb to inactivity, lethargy, depression, and hopelessness.  Be part of a community that holds on to independence, longevity, laughter, and good times.  That community is Harmony Social Adult Day Care.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Deck the halls with boughs of Harmony

Everyone’s favorite season is right around the corner.  A season packed with incandescent lights, sugar cookies, warm peppermint lattes, Christmas trees, and of course gifts! Who doesn’t love Christmas?! Christmas is more than just material goods, but more importantly it’s a time for family to come together and enjoy quality time with each other.  During this time people all over the world fly, drive, or take other forms of transportation to see their families.  Family should be the most important thing in our lives.  Unfortunately there are many people that don’t have anyone to share this season with.  There are many reasons for this. Both the family member lives too far and the resources to travel are not available; or sadly to say; many family members are neglected and forgotten about.  Luckily we’re here to deck the halls with boughs of Harmony.

We here at Harmony at 154th street celebrate all major holidays including Christmas.  We are your family away from family.  This past thanksgiving we had a pot luck dinner with some of our participants.  Needless to say the food was superb! Honestly my thanksgiving at Harmony was better than my own at home.  View the pictures below.  A few of our participants came to me personally and thanked me and Harmony for putting together this lunch the day after Thanksgiving because they themselves did not have family to spend thanksgiving with this year.  These testimonials have warmed our hearts, because we honestly go above and beyond to treat all of our participants like nothing less than family.

We love our participants because we know how different and unique they all are.  Here at Harmony at 154th all these characters from all walks of life come together in perfect Harmony.  Those without family nearby have found a family with us.  At the same time those with a loving caring family have entrusted our staff with the care of their loved ones. This is beneficial for the participant and for the care provider. It is beneficial for the participant, because they will enjoy a day full of activities that serve the purpose of stimulating the mind and body.  These activities include daily exercise, musical entertainment, bingo, chess, pool, and so much more.  We also provide warm nutritious meals for breakfast and lunch. This is beneficial for the care provider as well because while the loved one is at the center they can attend to other responsibilities, or just enjoy some respite from daily care responsibilities.

Join us this holiday season, and be part of more than just a center… be part of our family.  You can schedule your visit with us by calling 718-585-5440.  We are here Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm.  Call today!

Say goodbye to doubt

Normally, adult day care is used to relieve the caregiver of his or her duties for the day while ensuring that the care recipient will still receive the proper care in a safe, friendly environment. Our center operates during normal business hours five days a week from 8:30AM-5PM.  Currently, there are more than 4,000 of these programs operating in the United States, but Harmony at 154th is like none other.

Harmony at 154th specializes in providing persons whom have difficulty with activities of daily living with a fun environment of socialization.  Unfortunately, many people with these limitations feel less than useful because of this.  They tend to stay within their homes because they don’t want to be a burden on other people. THEY ARE NOT A BURDEN TO US. We look forward to meeting you and your loved one, and spending time with you both.  Social adult day care serves as a means to preserve and even restore independence. It’s a place where you can meet people with similar situations, and simultaneously do different activities that will just make the day fly by.

Benefits & Services

While adult day care can be a great resource for caregivers, many refuse to consider this option. Some worry that their loved ones will resent participating in such a program, while others feel guilty at the thought of leaving their loved ones in another person’s care. At Harmony at 154th we improve the recipient’s overall behavior and provide the caregiver with much-needed time off.

This is how your loved one can benefit from Harmony at 154th:

  • It allows him or her to stay in his or her community while the caregiver goes to work
  • It gives him or her a break from the caregiver
  • It provides needed social interaction
  • It provides greater structure to his or her daily activities

Harmony at 154th provides a variety of services and activities, including:

  • Assistance with eating, reminders to take medications, toileting, and/or walking

What are you afraid of?

There is no doubt that October is many people’s favorite month.  After a hot summer; the cool crisp air is a big relief for many. This is jean jacket/light sweater weather.  Many people love October for the walks in the park as they fall in love with the color changing foliage.  Other people love October for the fashion that comes along with autumn. Many like this season because it is pumpkin pie season! I must admit October is my favorite month.  It’s heaven on earth. It’s around this time we start seeing the department stores selling Halloween costumes and decorations. People begin stocking up on candy for the trick-or-treaters. This time is fun for many people. But since we are on the topic of Halloween; I ask you the reader; what are you afraid of?  While many are afraid of the dark, spiders, and snakes; others are more afraid of being alone.  Honestly isolation isn’t some fictitious thing such as Frankenstein. It is a real occurrence that many times leads to depression.  You may be one of those people that feel alone and hopeless.  You or someone you know may be confined to their homes without any human interaction; let alone physical or mental stimulation. Luckily, there is a way out.

Harmony at 154th Social Adult Day Care located at 367 East 154th Street, Bronx, NY, 10455 is that way out.  We are a center that provides everything that you need.  We offer a number of activities here to keep you happy and healthy mentally and physically.  If you like music we offer musical entertainment, and sing-alongs.  Are you a movie enthusiast? Come watch your favorite movies on any of our 8 big screen televisions with surround sound.  You will never be bored at Harmony at 154th. We have bingo, chess, card games, and checker games. Come shoot some pool with us in our main hall. We keep you active by providing daily exercise through zumba sessions, tai-chi, and self defense classes. We offer art and computer classes here as well.  You’ll never be hungry while you’re at Harmony at 154th because we offer a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks on a daily basis. If you don’t feel like doing anything on any given day just come and relax in our relax room, or sit down in our library and read your favorite book.  There is so much more to do here. This is just some of our activities.

Yet even with all these exciting things many people are scared to join a social adult day care. Many people think that joining a center would mean the loss of independence, but this is an erroneous concept.  As a matter of fact our program is here to keep you independent for as long as possible. Others are afraid that joining this program will take away other services that they have such as medications, doctor’s appointments and etc.  Enrolling in a social adult day care will not strip you of any services you are already receiving.  Social Adult Day Care is an ancillary service that you can benefit from.  I’ve also heard people say that they are afraid to join because they receive home care, and they don’t want to lose their home attendant.  Enrolling in a social adult day care does not take away your home attendant.  Having home care is actually required to be a part of a social adult day care.  Finally I have heard people say “I love the idea of your center but I don’t want a home attendant.”  We understand we can’t force any service upon you which is why we offer affordable pricing to be part of Harmony at 154th.  Look at it as a club you have to pay to be a part of.  If you don’t have a home attendant, but feel like you need one; we help you with obtaining one. So I ask you once more; what are you afraid of? Join us today!

This past Saturday September 27, 2014, Harmony at 154th celebrated their Grand Opening, and quite honestly the support from the community was tremendous! Our center was full with people having a good time.  We ran out of food at one point and had to order more.  This for us was a good thing, because it means that our expectations were exceeded. After visiting our center there was no denying that Harmony at 154th was the place to be.  We had music, dancing, food, zumba, and vendors providing the community with giveaways and information on their services. The best thing of it all is that Harmony at 154th was filled with laughter, family, and good energy. On behalf of the Harmony Social Adult Day Care staff we would like to thank everyone who made this grand opening truly grand!  We invite you all to Harmony where every day is a celebration!

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. If you or someone you know is having difficulty with activities of daily living due to general illness, please feel free to reach out to us for a free consultation at 718-585-5440. Don’t fossilize! Socialize!

Ever been to a museum? My favorite is the museum of natural history in New York City.  When you walk in there you are immediately transported into a different world that varies from room to room and exhibit to exhibit.  Although a trip to the museum is always fun and educational you will never find a living breathing dinosaur there, and thank goodness for that.  Unlike Shawn Levy’s movie “Night at the Museum;” starring Ben Stiller nothing comes to life at the museum.  Our lives should not be a museum.  No matter what age you are it is important to stay active and socialize with other people.

Physical activity is vital at any age, but as you grow older, changes set in that make exercise even more crucial. Conditions that typically develop with aging can be delayed when you stay active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that physical activity can even extend life expectancy. Although you should consult your doctor before starting any type of exercise regiment; there are things that you can do daily to keep yourself active mentally and physically. Here are a few

  1. 1.       Enjoy your retirement

a)      Start planning when you are still working. Think of activities, which you enjoy but had no time to do. For example, plan on how to rehabilitate your neglected garden,
b) Take up hobbies, which are less strenuous like reading and which may have money-making possibilities like sewing, growing flowers, raising animals, cooking, and tutoring.
c) Join social activities, which you can start in your active years and continue after you have retired.

  1. 2.       Enjoy an active social life

To stay healthy older persons should live life to the fullest – socialize because:

a)      An active social life will keep your system going. It presents physical and mental challenges to keep you lively,
b) Humans are social beings, so stay tuned to the social life around you,
c) Get in contact with other older persons of your community and organize groups with similar interest.

  1. 3.       Try to make your meals attractive

A balance nutritious diet helps maintain good health, fight infection, and prevent diseases. Three reasons why older persons should continue to balance their diet by eating lots of vegetables, fruits and low-fat meat or fish are;
a) Absorption in the gut becomes less attractive for some nutrients,
b) The immune system gets weaker and so needs more support through nutritious foods,
c) Chewing food may become more difficult, so older people need appropriate food for their bodily needs.

Meals can also be made attractive for older persons by;

a) Finding food stores or markets where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and low-fat meats or fish,
b) Being careful with storing food especially if you do not have a refrigerator. Eat leftovers from meals on the same day,
c) Making your meals something to look forward to everyday and take time to prepare them,
d) Finding new ways of combining food you like with new products you have heard of. Experimenting in your cooking,
e) Using food with lots of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals to help prevent constipation.

  1. 4.       Stay mobile- Go out and enjoy life!

If you are a resident of New York City; specifically in The Bronx; you not only have a place to enjoy your retirement, but you can enjoy yourself socializing with others while having nutritious meals and staying mobile.  Sounds good right?! We think so! The name of this wonderland of socialization is Harmony Social Adult Day Care. We call it Harmony at 154 for short. We are happy to announce that on September 27, 2014 we are celebrating our grand opening.  We will be giving away prizes, and food which you can enjoy while we treat your ears to great musical entertainment.  Come out and enjoy yourself; our treat! Our center is loaded with the latest in technology and activities. We provide cognitive and comprehensive activities to keep you active.  There’s something for every enthusiast at Harmony at 154, so come by and visit us.

A lot of people are turned off by the “Day Care” part.  We don’t blame you.  After all day care is for children right?! It is place where children spend a few hours playing with their friends while they wait for mom or dad to pick them up and take them home.  Well look at it this way… When I was a child I enjoyed playing with GI Joe action figures. They were my favorite toys when I was young.  As I grew older I no longer played with GI Joe action figures, but instead I started to play the guitar.  Now that’s my favorite toy.  An adult day care is a place to spend time with some of your friends while you play dominoes, pool, perhaps a game of poker. It is a place where you can watch your favorite sports teams on our big screen televisions while you relax on our comfortable reclining chairs.  We are not trying to strip you of your independence; on the contrary we are trying to enhance it.

Lastly I want to say that Harmony at 154 isn’t only beneficial for the participant but for the care taker.  It provides the care taker respite from the duties they have to perform on a daily basis.  During this period of time the care taker has time to address personal errands resting assuredly that their loved one is being provided with the maximum in care.

Do not conform to your age or limitations. Don’t fossilize, socialize! Take advantage of everything life has to offer.  Life is not a museum.  Life is a gift with endless opportunities.  You can get more information on Harmony at 154 by visiting our website at www.harmonysocialadultdaycare.com or by calling us at 718-741-5956.
