Who doesn’t love breakfast?! It is the first meal of the day.  Breakfast jumpstarts you into your day.  Breakfast foods vary from culture to culture, and it is many people’s favorite meal of the day.  Personally I can eat breakfast food any time of the day.  I love breakfast, and it’s clear that our participants do too.  Besides having total access to all the activities we offer we put the cherry on top with our delicious and nutritious meals.

Our breakfast foods include waffles, omelettes, turkey bacon, orange juice, coffee, tea, fresh fruit, hashbrowns, pancakes and more.  The best thing is that we serve the correct portion, and follow dietary restrictions.  We have participants that are strictly vegetarian; others that don’t eat certain things due to allergies or other health problems. Crochet, Monet, or both

There is no doubt that Harmony at 154th has very talented and creative participants.  We’ve seen all types of handmade creations made by our very own participants.  These creations can be seen on our walls when you come to our center.  Whatever you’re good at doing with your hands we want to see it.  Two of the fan favorites here is crocheting and water painting. Here are a few tips on both types of arts that may help you become a better artisan.

Crochet

  1. 1.       Break for hand and finger stretching: Sometimes you’ll get in the groove and it will be 45 minutes of non-stop crochet. It’s usually paired with a show you may be watching, probably The Steve Wilkos Show or Caso Cerrado! I have found that you need to take quick breaks to stretch your hands and do some finger rolls, otherwise you can get a slight cramp. No fun! I highly suggest you take a mental note to stop for a bit and roll your wrists!
  2. 2.       Watch your posture: As you crochet, you can sit in a sort of recliner chair with your feet propped up. But you may tend to slouch as you get going. Your head is down looking at your work, then up looking at the tv, and your shoulders are now turning into a hunchback! Again, same as #1 and hand stretching, watch for posture and how you’re sitting as you crochet. We don’t need hunchy crocheters out there!!
  3. 3.       Tension matters: Where you position your yarn in your left hand matters. As you pull the yarn through each loop for each stitch with the right hand, you are holding on to the other end with your left hand. It matters how tight or loose you hold that yarn in your left hand and you need to have consistency. Otherwise you’ll get a piece that has 2 rows in the middle that are super tight or super stretched, depending on how tight or loose you were holding the yarn. You’ll start to get into a groove and it will become natural. But just watch for this, it can make your work come out wonky, even if you did the right number of stitches.
  4. 4.       Slow and steady wins the race: Once you get started on a project, you get excited about how it will turn out and start to move too fast. Or perhaps you think you have to get through this project quick because you have 20 other projects you want to complete. You get into a rush. And because of that, you may start to get sloppy, getting into a groove and start going too fast. Try to stick to even, steady stitches, helping with your tension as well, mentioned above.
  5. 5.        Keep a bag or basket by the couch: You should dedicate a crochet basket in your room. You can fill it with current projects, complete with yarn and hooks. You can even place pair of small scissors is in there.  It’s better to keep everything in one spot instead of having everything scattered. The goal is to have it all in one handy spot.
  6. 1.       Watercolors Dry Lighter:  With watercolor paint, a color will always look more intense (stronger and darker) when it is wet. A color will always be lighter and paler when dry.
It’s something you get a feel for through practice and experience. If your paintings look insipid, make the colors more intense by using more paint and less water, or painting another layer of a color over the first.
  7. 2.       Test a color out first: Watercolor paint dries very fast, so test a color on a scrap of paper or on the edge of your painting before using it. That way you’ll know whether it’s the hue and/or tone you’re after.
  8. 3.       Don’t add too much water:  Avoid inadvertently adding more water to your paint after you’ve washed your brush by dabbing the brush onto a dry cloth before putting it in the paint again. If you’ve loaded a brush with paint and decide you needed less paint, hold clean cloth at ferrule end of the brush hairs to soak up some of the excess. Doing it at this end helps keep the pigment at the tip of the brush.
  9. 4.       Water color paint is transparent: Watercolor paint is transparent. You can see through the layers of color you’ve painted, making it near impossible to hide mistakes. Don’t fight against this, but embrace it and work with it.
  10. 5.       Use a decent watercolor brush: Rather have just one, good brush than a handful of cheap ones that splay out and drop hairs. It’ll save you a lot of frustration. A good brush retains its shape so you can get a very fine brush mark from the point; it holds a good quantity of paint so you need to reload it less often.

Painting

I hope this has been helpful to some of you.  The best tip of them all is “Practice makes perfect.” Come practice with us here at Harmony at 154th we have everything you need here.  All you need is your hands.  Call us today for a free one day pass to our center.  We provide more than just crocheting and water painting.  We also offer other activities and nutritious breakfasts and lunches at no cost to you.

Pool Shark Attack

cheat-engine-8-ball-pool

Good Day Everyone! We have made it yet through another week.  Since our last blog a lot has been happening at Harmony at 154th. The fun just keeps on happening here.  For the next few minutes please indulge me as I focus on one of the many activities we have here at Harmony at 154th.  Personally it’s one of my favorite things to do here, and that is billiards.  As soon as you enter our dual floor state of the art facility there it is; our pool table.  We didn’t coincidentally place our pool table at the mere entrance of our main hall for no reason.  We know how much people love to play pool.  Quite honestly playing pool is my favorite thing to do here (although I get my behind kicked by the many pool sharks at our facility) it makes me wish that I was eligible to become a participant myself, so that I can play every day and become a pool shark myself. I like to think that I’m a shark in the making.

Well, we are calling all pool sharks to come to Harmony and show us what they’re made of.  In the past we’ve had pool tournaments and we’ve seen some of the biggest sharks I’ve ever seen.  We are still looking for the proverbial Steven Spielberg Jaws of the pool world.  Is it you?! Well it can be, but if you find yourself to be more of a guppy (like me) here are a few tips to help you get to shark status.

1. Work on Your Form

Proper form is one of the many important parts of pool that many novice players overlook. One of the most important things that you need to focus on is keeping your neck straight, for example. Keeping your neck straight will give you the proper amount of perspective that you need to be able to visualize exactly where the ball is going to go before you strike it.

You’ll also want to secure your bridge hand, which will help you execute a wider array of shots with maximum efficiency. Finally, you’ll want to keep your backswing smooth and slow to help yourself stay coordinated while taking shots.

2. Learn From Your Mistakes

One of the most important things that a person can do in life is learn from his or her mistakes. This advice goes for all aspects of life, from your personal life to your professional life and even to the world of pool. If you consistently miss the same type of shot or freeze up in the same situation, take the time to stop and think about what is happening.

If you always approach a shot from the wrong angle, identify your weak points and learn how to turn them into positive attributes. Doing so will help make sure you’re ready for any event that is likely to happen and you won’t make these same types of mistakes again.

3. Always Stay Relaxed

Staying as comfortable as possible is one of the key parts to success in many different forms of life.

When you start to get uncomfortable and begin to stress out, you are more likely to make quick decisions just to get yourself out of a certain type of situation.

If you don’t leave yourself the proper amount of time to think things through before you move forward with your actions, you are much more likely to make a mistake.

The same is true in pool. Always make sure that you’re staying as calm as possible and that you’re giving yourself the appropriate amount of time necessary to make the best possible strategic decisions.

4. Look at the Entire Table

Adult Day Care Activities Bronx, One of the most important things that you can do in pool is walk around the entire table and strategize before you make your shot. Playing pool on a professional level is a lot like playing chess. You shouldn’t just be thinking about the move you want to make.

You need to be thinking about the next three moves that you’ll make, as well as the moves your opponent will make, before you move forward. Taking a look at the entire table will allow you to do that, because you’ll be able to see the ramifications from the shot you’re thinking of making.

5. Don’t Get Fancy

When you watch pool professionals play on television, you are likely to see people making “trick shots” and doing other types of flashy moves to get attention while they’re winning. Keep in mind that in the world of professional pool, these types of actions are exceedingly rare. When you start trying to make “trick shots” is when you start slipping up and making mistakes.

The people on television are only making these types of moves because they’re on television and they know that millions of people could be watching. You’re not on television, so relax and take your time.

6. Never Forget Your Opponent

One of the most interesting aspects of the game of pool is how a decision that you make directly influences the decision your opponent has to make. The game is much more focused on strategy than a lot of people realize. Right before you take a shot, always stop to think about what your opponent will be forced to do next.

Even if you sink a ball, for example, you could be setting them up for an even better shot. Likewise, it may be better to pass up on that easy shot if you can block your opponent’s next move in the process.

7. Practice makes perfect

Though it should go without saying, the idea that you can’t play pool like a professional without a great deal of practice bears repeating.

Practice makes perfect in nearly all aspects of life, but it is especially true when it comes to the world of professional sports.

When you watch a professional play pool, you aren’t watching someone who is picking up a cue for the first time.

You aren’t watching someone who plays casually with friends a few times a month. You’re watching someone who has practiced for hundreds of hours before they ever set foot near that professional table.

Good news is; you have a place to practice here at Harmony at 154th so what are you waiting for find your inner shark today! We provide free door to door transportation, and $1 breakfasts and lunches.  What are you waiting for call us today 718-585-5440

All walks of life

I hope that as you read this your year has kicked off to a great one for all of you.  I have a good feeling that this year is going to be a great year for the city of New York.  I’m happy to call myself a New Yorker who has served this city and state to the best of my ability.  I have held many jobs and positions in my 29 years of life from porter to paramedic; from musician to marketer.  All these things have taught me something about life.  Life continues to be a learning experience no matter how old you are.  At our center Harmony at 154th; we have all kind of people that have come from all walks of life, but have one thing in common.

One of our participants is an ex judge.  You would think that she would be this serious person who just sits in our center and doesn’t talk to anyone.  She is quite the opposite.  You should hear her sing karaoke, and dance merengue.  She is the life of the party, and is a very approachable person.  We have a woman that comes to our center who is a great grandmother.  She has well over 30 grand children and 40 great grand children.  She grew up in the Dominican Republic where she raised her children all by herself from an early age, because her husband died at an early age.  She tells stories of how hard it was to raise 13 kids by herself.  Her story is truly inspiring.  She is a woman of much wisdom, but also one of the funniest participants we have. Harmony social adult day care at 154th has a participant who was a civil rights activist back in the times of apartheid.  She marched down Washington DC and was a demonstrator against racism and segregation. She now carries her leadership qualities into Harmony at 154th by being one of the first participants we ever had.  She didn’t need a full center to see why Harmony at 154th is the place to be.  She is personally one of my favorite participants to be around. She may be 65 but has the energy of a 30 year old.   At Harmony at 154th we also have an ex lawyer who is still very much with it.  He is a great conversationalist, and has many interesting stories to share.  This is a person who has overcome many things in his life, and shares these experiences with everyone at Harmony  home care in ny .  Finally we have a participant who is a survival of domestic abuse and cancer.  She’s an inspiration to everyone battling with household problems or an illness.  She is also one of the most outgoing persons at Harmony at 154th.  She has not allowed her past determine who she is now.

What do all these people have in common?  The answer is Harmony at 154th. They all made the choice to make Harmony at 154th the place where they will maintain or even improve their independence and vitality.  Harmony at 154th is more than just pool tables, and exercise, free breakfast and lunch, and bingo.  Harmony at 154th offers something more valuable than money.  We offer health; mental and physical well-being.  Our program keeps you away from inactivity which can lead to institutionalization in a nursing home or other skilled nursing facilities.  No matter where you came from, or what your story is; there’s a place for you at Harmony adult day care bronx at 154th.  Join a group of people that have said yes to increased independence, and better health.  Join a remarkable group of people who are just like you.  Call us today!

The Comfort Zone

Happy New Year Everyone!  We have made it to a new year, and there is nothing stopping us from becoming who we were made to be.  Nothing stopping us but ourselves I should say.  A few months ago I wrote a blog called “What are you afraid of?”  This blog challenged the reader to not be afraid of making new steps in life with the goal of bettering themselves.  Unfortunately, some of you are still scared of what might happen if you stepped out of your comfort zone.  From experience; do you know what makes life worth living?  Taking chances! We take chances every day, and we don’t even realize it.  A simple example is when we eat.  There is a chance that you might choke on cheeseburger you are consuming; yet we still eat it because we hope for the best, and it tastes good.  Other people play the lottery and invest money with the hope of getting rich, or winning a little extra pocket cash.  Chances are a part of life, but it seems like we don’t mind taking chances that bring us satisfaction.  So; let me present you with a chance that will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  Ready?..

Step out of your house.

Many people love staying home.  It is where we feel most comfortable, but if you live by yourself; as I do; you know how lonely it can get in there after a while.  What I do is step out of my house and find something productive to do.  This year flew by for me personally and that is because I kept myself busy.  Sadly many people (in specific the geriatric population) stay confined to their homes.  This is many times a product of depression caused by a loss in the family, or illness.  Many elderly people feel like their life has ended and they are no longer good for anything.  This is NOT true.  Harmony Social Adult Day strives to putting this flat out lie to rest once and for all by proving that life still goes on even in the golden years.  They are called golden years for a reason.  This time should be treasured because it is most valuable.  At Harmony Social Adult Day Care at 154th we want to see you shine like the gold that you are.  We want the latter years to be full of vibrant experiences that can stimulate and awaken the youth in all of us.

You can take many anti-depressive meds that have proven to be effective, but is this how you want to live? Taking anti-depressive meds for the rest of your life is not something you should settle for.  Fight this the natural way, and that is by becoming a participant at Harmony Adult Day Care.  Why Harmony at 154th? Because I strongly believe that our staff is unique.  Our staff has a way of reaching our participants in ways that cannot be obtained through meds alone.  We have noticed a significant change in the overall outlook of life in our participants.  Our interest lies in getting to know you and in giving you an amazing 8 hours a day.  Here at Harmony  health home care bronx at 154th you will meet other people that come from all walks of life, but that have one thing in common and that is that they all have decided to step out of their comfort zones and try out social adult day care.  Programs like Harmony at 154th have proven to change people’s frowns into permanent smiles, so allow us to do the same with you and/or your loved ones.  So take the chance many have already taken, but none have regretted.  Come to Harmony Social Adult Day Care. We believe that one day with us will kick off a change within you for a better, happier you.  Call us today and fill your new year with laughter and smiles.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Last Minute Questions

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has gone by.  2014 is down to its final day.  This has been a great year for many, and especially for us at Harmony Adult Day Care.  We opened our doors back in May 2014 and we did not know what to expect.  All we know is that we anticipated success, and thrive towards it every day.   We opened with the purpose of providing the residents of the community with a place where they can enjoy themselves doing a number of activities in a safe and monitored environment.  This upcoming year we will continue to provide this service to our community.

I’m aware that you may have some questions, and concerns regarding Harmony.  In this blog we attempt to put your mind at ease to help you make a step towards Social Adult Day Care in 2015.  Here are some of the frequently asked questions that we have been asked this year:

  • What are the benefits of joining Harmony Social Adult Day Care?

Joining a social adult day care has a dual benefit.  The first benefit is for the participant.  One thing we are aware of is that staying independent is key for the geriatric community.  Many fear to become useless or dependent towards the latter years of life.  Social Senior  day care service helps you not only stay active but independent simultaneously.  At Harmony we offer a number of activities to help with that.  The second benefit is for the care taker.  We are conscious that the responsibilities of a care taker are many.  These responsibilities at times make it hard for the care taker to handle personal business, or just enjoy some leisure time for themselves. Harmony serves as a respite for those care takers that just need some time to do anything.  We will take care of the loved one in a safe and vibrant environment.

  • What is there to do at Harmony at 154th?

A better question would be what isn’t there to do.  We offer any form of entertainment that you may fancy.  If you like to move around we offer daily exercise customized to your physical abilities, but with the purpose of exercising stiff or contracted extremities.  We offer zumba, tai chi, karate, and stretching techniques for exercise. We also offer a computer room in which we can show you how to do basic things on a computer.  We have a library where you can read up on your favorite gossip, or maybe just catch up reading your favorite book.  We have group discussions and book clubs as well.  If you just like to play we have a pool table, chess, bingo, card games, checkers, and wii sports.  We have musical entertainment as well from pre-recorded music to live music.  We offer dancing and karaoke as entertainment as well, and so much more.  You would have to see it for yourself.  You can schedule a visit by calling 718-585-5440.  The possibilities are endless here at Harmony at 154th.

  • What are the requirements to be part of Harmony at 154th?

Like all social adult day cares having Medicaid tied to a managed long term care program (MLTC program) is required to be part of Harmony Social Adult Day Care.  A MLTC gives the Medicaid member access to services such as social adult day , but it also gives access to persons that need to be institutionalized in a nursing home or some type of skilled nursing facility.  A MLTC also gives you access to home health care services (home attendant).  This means that everyone who wants to be part of Harmony at 154th must have home care in place already, or have a need for some type of homecare.  This has proven to be a huge discouragement for many people this year.  Why do I need a home attendant to be part of a center that promotes independence? My answer to that is: change your focal point on the concept of home care.  The reason many people opt for home care instead of institutionalization is because they want to remain independent.  There is a widespread misconception on home care service.  The home attendant is provided for you to keep your independence by being an extra hand at home.  The key word is home.  I have never met one person in my many years of working with the geriatric population that has told me that they enjoy being in a nursing home over their own home.  Let’s look at homecare in a different light, and see that this service is beneficial and essential to the continuum of the recipient’s independence, and plus you get to play pool, and enjoy delicious, and nutritious meals at no out of pocket cost to you.

  • What if I don’t want a home attendant; is there a way to still be part of the center?

Yes there is, but because of state regulations it cannot be through Medicaid.  We offer great and affordable pricing for you to be part of the center.  If you pay privately you will have access to all of our services and get transported door to door by our personal driver.  Private pay gives you access to Harmony at 154th street without the home attendant.  Call us at 718-585-5440 for more information.

  • I don’t have Medicaid, but I do have Medicare can I use Medicare to join?

Unfortunately we do not work with Medicare, but we can help you apply for Medicaid if you haven’t already, or you can take the private pay rates which are affordable.  Please visit us at 367 East 154th Street, Bronx, NY 10455 to take a tour of the place and get a free day pass.  We can discuss the steps necessary to join us here at Harmony at 154th Street.

Now that we are entering 2015 make it your resolution to stay active and healthy.  Harmony at 154th Street can help you achieve that. Call us today!

Sweet Christmas

Sweet Christmas!

The holidays are many people’s favorite time of the year.  Andy Williams thought so when he sang “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”  It can also be a hectic time for many with all the shopping, and cooking.  If you’re anything like me; you do your shopping on the 24th; shame on us.  It’s hard to sometimes figure out what to get certain people in our lives too.  Many of us just opt out of the stress and get gift cards for everyone.  One thing that we all have in common (well at least most of us) is that we all love snickerdoodle cookies, sugar cookies, and ginger bread man cookies.  Many people get careless and go all out eating sweets, and other foods that aren’t good if you have diabetes.

Diabetes doesn’t magically disappear during the holidays.  It never takes a vacation or a break.  There are many ways to control it although.  There are also many other alternatives to conventional foods to make them diabetes friendly.  In this blog we want to share some of our favorite diabetes friendly desserts that you can make this year that are still very delicious.

PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

The perfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter gives these brownies a rich taste for only about 150 calories per serving.

 APPLE SPICE CAKE

This is the perfect warm comfort dessert. A dollop of whipped topping and a sprinkle of cinnamon finish off the look.

PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE IN GINGERSNAP CRUST

Who says that pumpkin season has to end in November.  Indulge yourself with a slice of this decadent pumpkin cheesecake, and serve it at your next family gathering.  This is a dessert that is sure to impress.

GINGERBREAD MAN COOKIES

Without a doubt this is a holiday favorite.  At only 73 calories per serving; you can enjoy these decadent sweet ginger men.

Many people stay away from sweets altogether.  Sweets are a part of life.  Nothing is truly bad if eaten in moderation.  Just because these are diabetic friendly treats it does not mean that you should overdue it.  Know your limits! At Harmony Social Adult Day Care Bronx, we love sweets! Allow us to take care of your family with diabetes.  Our staff is trained to remind your loved ones to take their insulin, and other medications.  Our staff will monitor the food that your loved one consumes, so that blood glucose levels remain at a healthy level.  Call us today and make this Christmas a sweet one! Caroling in perfect Harmony

In my 30 years of life I have only gone caroling once for the holidays.  I was maybe 11 or 12 when my church group decided to go door to door singing Christmas classics. We started by visiting people we knew and worked our way to the homes of strangers.  There are two things I remember about that day one I was cold and two I was embarrassed.  After all I was obliged to participate.  All my friends were going and I didn’t want them to look at me like a Debbie downer.  Caroling is something that is no longer seen; at least not in the metropolis known as New York City.  The truth is that the times are bad and going door to door isn’t advised.  Back in the 90’s we were with a large group of people under much supervision.

Caroling began back in the 19th century, and its original intent was not confined to Christmas songs alone.  Caroling involved a group of people going door to door at anytime of the year to sing to the residents of that town.  In spite of being frozen and a little embarrassed on the day that I went; I was overtaken by two things, and that was the joy that we evidently brought to the families we visited and that we all sang in perfect Harmony although we weren’t all singers.

At our center Harmony Social Adult Day Care Bronx, we are keeping this tradition alive by singing along to your favorite Christmas songs.  One of the many things we do here at Harmony is sing-alongs/karaoke.  I can honestly say that sing alongs and karaoke is one of our participant’s favorites.  Studies prove that singing aloud naturally changes your mood by making you happier.  Try it! Next time you’re feeling down or if you’re upset.  Personally it has worked for me.  Harmony at 154th street’s goal is to keep you happy and healthy.  We are sure that singing along to one of your favorite songs will drastically improve your mood.  Staying home, enclosed within 4 walls is not going to make anything better.  Come to Harmony and socialize with people that are just like you.  Just like my friends, and me we weren’t all singers, but we all sang in perfect harmony on that night.  Our participants are from different walks of life but when we come together it’s perfect.  Harmony at 154th is proud to say that we are more than just another center… We are your family away from home.  Whether you’re a singer or not; there is an activity for anything you fancy to drastically change your outlook on life.

Join us today, and be part of a growing community that refuses to succumb to inactivity, lethargy, depression, and hopelessness.  Be part of a community that holds on to independence, longevity, laughter, and good times.  That community is Harmony Social Adult Day Care.

Deck the halls with boughs of Harmony

Everyone’s favorite season is right around the corner.  A season packed with incandescent lights, sugar cookies, warm peppermint lattes, Christmas trees, and of course gifts! Who doesn’t love Christmas?! Christmas is more than just material goods, but more importantly it’s a time for family to come together and enjoy quality time with each other.  During this time people all over the world fly, drive, or take other forms of transportation to see their families.  Family should be the most important thing in our lives.  Unfortunately there are many people that don’t have anyone to share this season with.  There are many reasons for this. Both the family member lives too far and the resources to travel are not available; or sadly to say; many family members are neglected and forgotten about.  Luckily we’re here to deck the halls with boughs of Harmony.

We here at Harmony at 154th street celebrate all major holidays including Christmas.  We are your family away from family.  This past thanksgiving we had a pot luck dinner with some of our participants.  Needless to say the food was superb! Honestly my thanksgiving at Harmony was better than my own at home.  View the pictures below.  A few of our participants came to me personally and thanked me and Harmony for putting together this lunch the day after Thanksgiving because they themselves did not have family to spend thanksgiving with this year.  These testimonials have warmed our hearts, because we honestly go above and beyond to treat all of our participants like nothing less than family.

We love our participants because we know how different and unique they all are.  Here at Harmony at 154th all these characters from all walks of life come together in perfect Harmony.  Those without family nearby have found a family with us.  At the same time those with a loving caring family have entrusted our staff with the care of their loved ones. This is beneficial for the participant and for the care provider. It is beneficial for the participant, because they will enjoy a day full of activities that serve the purpose of stimulating the mind and body.  These activities include daily exercise, musical entertainment, bingo, chess, pool, and so much more.  We also provide warm nutritious meals for breakfast and lunch. This is beneficial for the care provider as well because while the loved one is at the center they can attend to other responsibilities, or just enjoy some respite from daily care responsibilities.

Join us this holiday season, and be part of more than just a center… be part of our family.  You can schedule your visit with us by calling 718-585-5440.  We are here Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm.  Call today!
