Stay Active, Healthy and Socialize

Physical activity is vital at any age, but as you grow older, changes set in that make exercise even more crucial. Conditions that typically develop with aging can be delayed when you stay active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that physical activity can even extend life expectancy. Although you should consult your doctor before starting any type of exercise regiment; there are things that you can do daily to keep yourself active mentally and physically. Here are a few

  1. Enjoy your retirement
  2. a) Start planning when you are still working. Think of activities, which you enjoy but had no time to do. For example, plan on how to rehabilitate your neglected garden.
    b) Take up hobbies, which are less strenuous like reading and which may have money-making possibilities like sewing, growing flowers, raising animals, cooking, and tutoring.
    c) Join social activities, which you can start in your active years and continue after you have retired.
  3. Enjoy an active social life

To stay healthy older persons should live life to the fullest – socialize because:

  1. a) An active social life will keep your system going. It presents physical and mental challenges to keep you lively,
    b) Humans are social beings, so stay tuned to the social life around you,
    c) Get in contact with other older persons of your community and organize groups with similar interest.
  2. Try to make your meals attractive

A balance nutritious diet helps maintain good health, fight infection, and prevent diseases. Three reasons why older persons should continue to balance their diet by eating lots of vegetables, fruits and low-fat meat or fish are;
a) Absorption in the gut becomes less attractive for some nutrients,
b) The immune system gets weaker and so needs more support through nutritious foods,
c) Chewing food may become more difficult, so older people need appropriate food for their bodily needs.

Meals can also be made attractive for older persons by;

  1. a) Finding food stores or markets where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and low-fat meats or fish.
    b) Being careful with storing food especially if you do not have a refrigerator. Eat leftovers from meals on the same day.
    c) Making your meals something to look forward to everyday and take time to prepare them.
    d) Finding new ways of combining food you like with new products you have heard of, Experimenting in your cooking.
    e) Using food with lots of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and cereals to help prevent constipation.
  2. Stay mobile- Go out and enjoy life!

If you are a resident of New York City; specifically in The Bronx; you not only have a place to enjoy your retirement, but you can enjoy yourself socializing with others while having nutritious meals and staying mobile.  Sounds great right?! We think so! The name of this wonderland of socialization is Harmony@154 Social Adult Day Care. Come out and enjoy yourself; our treat! Our center is loaded with the latest in technology and activities. We provide cognitive and comprehensive activities to keep you active.  There’s something for every enthusiast at Harmony at 154, so come by and visit us.

A lot of people are turned off by the “Day Care” part.  We don’t blame you.  After all day care is for children right?! It is place where children spend a few hours playing with their friends while they wait for mom or dad to pick them up and take them home.  Well we look at it this way… An adult day care is a place to spend time with some of your friends while you play dominoes, pool, perhaps a game of poker. It is a place where you can watch your favorite sports teams on our big screen televisions while you relax on our comfortable reclining chairs.  We are not trying to strip you of your independence; on the contrary we are trying to enhance it.

Lastly I want to say that Harmony at 154 isn’t only beneficial for the participant but for the care taker.  It provides the care taker respite from the duties they have to perform on a daily basis.  During this period of time the care taker has time to address personal errands resting assuredly that their loved one is being provided with the maximum in care.

Loretta Fleming(Participant): “I love being at Harmony,Keisha,Carmen are beautiful people, they keep us laughing and entertained,Gina speaks to us every morning as we come in,I feel welcomed each day that I go in.”!!! Love the trips!!!!

Harmony Superstar

Many people tune in on a weekly basis to watch shows like “The Voice” or “American Idol” where talent from all over the US unite to win the ultimate title of being the next singing sensation.  All these people have one thing in common. They all want to be a Super Star!

Singing is just something everyone likes to do.  It is proven that singing aloud naturally makes you feel better.  I’ve tried it myself.  There have been times when I was feeling a little under the weather and just began singing along to one of my favorite songs in the car, and have felt significantly better.

Music is such a powerful thing.  Music has the power to change your mood, and here at Harmony we have adopted this concept. We put it to the test on a weekly basis.  We have noticed significant change in attitude, and outlook of our participants.  Instantly; one participant comes to mind. She joined our center with a diagnosis of chronic depression, and now she spends her days here with us dancing and singing to her favorite bachata songs.

On a weekly basis we have karaoke, and everybody loves it. Here we treat you like the superstar you really are. Sing anything from Anthony Santos to Smokey Robinson.  We have any and every song you may want to sing along to.  Maybe singing isn’t for you unless it is in the shower; our sound system and room acoustics will give you the reverb and tone that can make even a bad singer sound like Diana Ross.  The best thing about karaoke is that it’s just plain fun, and even more fun when done in a group.

Perhaps this sounds like something that you would like for yourself or a loved one.  Spending too much time at home isn’t good for anyone.  Mental and physical stimulus is very important to overall health.  At Harmony at 154th we help you stay active and independent longer. We also keep you healthy longer through fun and interactive activities.

If you want to try us out before making your decision you definitely can. We offer free one day passes to the center where you can enjoy different activities and rooms such as the cyber room, or relax room.  We provide free door to door transportation so call us today and speak with David  to set up a day to visit.  You won’t regret it. See you soon.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. If you or someone you know is having difficulty with activities of daily living due to depression, please feel free to reach out to us for a free consultation at 718-585-5440. Beat the Heat

I woke up this morning and looked at the weather and noticed that it was only 7am and it was already 81 degrees with a high of 95 today.  This is when I realized that days of being in the pool all day were approaching fast.  Unfortunately it is only Tuesday and I have to go into work.  This means that I have to leave the comfort of my wonderful bed and the comfort of my AC to get up and get ready to go.  I don’t know which one is harder waking up early or dealing with the heat.  The combination of both is just a lethal concoction to make anyone just stay home in front of a fan or in an air conditioned room.  Luckily, I work at Harmony Social Adult Day Care where the AC is always at a good comfortable level.

The great cooling system accompanied by our cold refreshing beverages makes Harmony at 154th the place to be during the summer.  Many New Yorkers go away for the summer, and that’s always fun, but a good number of people stay here in New York for many reasons.  One of the most common reasons is budget.  For some people it is just not in their budgets to take a trip down to Jamaica, or Florida.  I’m one of those people that stay here for the summer, but I find fun things to do.  Here at Harmony it feels like a mini vacation.  Well not for me because I’m working, but for our participants it is.  Makes me wish I could enroll here sometimes to just enjoy myself here.  If I were a participant here I would get me a nice cold glass of iced tea or lemonade, head up to the relax room with the recliners and just watch movies, but that’s just me.  You can do almost everything here.  You name it and we most likely have it.

Unfortunately many elderly people suffer heat strokes due to poor ventilation and cooling in their homes.  Some of the sign and symptoms of heat stroke include:  High body temperature. A body temperature of 104 F (40 C) or higher is the main sign of heatstroke, Altered mental state or behavior, Alteration in sweating, Nausea and vomiting, Flushed skin, Rapid breathing, Racing heart rate, and Headache.  All these signs and symptoms are more common in the elderly population, because they take longer to adapt to sudden climate changes.  While you’re here at Harmony you don’t have to worry about suffering any heat related illnesses.  Your comfort and health is our number 1 priority.

Call us today and set up a one day pass with us and see it for yourself.  We provide free transportation with AC as well.  You’ll be covered while you’re in our care.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. If you or someone you know is having difficulty with activities of daily living due to heat related illnesses, please feel free to reach out to us for a free consultation at 718-585-5440. Wii want to play

Let me take you back to the late 1940’s and 1950’s for a moment.  This is a beautiful era that even people born in a later era can appreciate.   Modern culture still has a fascination with the fads, crazes and pop sensations from the age when the whole family sat down for dinner every night and a car with fins could get you a date. But there was more to the 1950s than sock hops and drive-ins; some of the trends and social movements that came out of that decade, such as the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and the widespread adoption of TV, continue to shape our lives today. Rock music captivated the younger set, although their elders disapproved. Elvis Presley entered the living room through the Ed Sullivan variety show, which was broadcast in black and white. RCA first broadcast color television in June, 1951, but it was not yet available to the masses. “I Love Lucy,” “Leave It to Beaver,” and “The Twilight Zone” are examples of popular shows at the time. Children celebrated their birthdays with parties at skating rinks. Hula Hoops, Barbie dolls and electric train sets are representative toys of the 1950s. All ages enjoyed dancing and dancing lessons.

Many people took their entire families to drive-in movie theaters. Favorite films of the era included “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant”. Musicals such as “South Pacific” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds” were also hits. James Dean and Marilyn Monroe are iconic stars of the 50s. Children preferred the matinee westerns shown at local theaters starring Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. Much of the fun of the 1950s was family oriented and centered around the children of the post-war baby boom.  The point is people have always had different ways of entertaining themselves. Now in 2015; forms of entertainment have changed.  Although the concept remains the same;  the way to achieve “being entertained” has really changed.  With technological advancements and breakthroughs; people have found new ways to stay active and interactive.  One of those ways is through a video game consul known as the Nintendo Wii. Senior citizens and children can agree that Nintendo Wii is just a whole lot of fun.

Our participants really enjoy playing wii bowling on our wall size big screen.  Along with wii bowling we also have wii golf, wii tennis, and other enjoyable games that make time fly by.  The Nintendo Wii requires you to use your body as the controller for the game.  You’re not just sitting in one spot staring at a screen.  Instead, you are the player in the game.  This not only provides entertainment, but it also provides and promotes better blood circulation, and overall health.  It is really easy to play. Many people are turned off to learning new things because they fear that it will be too difficult, but our staff here at Harmony at 154th street will walk you through the simple process.  We know that once you get the hang of it you’re not going to stop playing.

Harmony at 154th Street has your best health in mind.  If you suffer from stiffness, or from depression let us help.  Our center has provided many people with better living.  We believe that you will enjoy your time here so much that we offer everyone a free one day pass to come and enjoy themselves playing wii, doing arts and crafts, listening to live music, playing pool and other great and interactive activities that will start you off to better health from day one.  Call us today!

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. If you or someone you know is having difficulty with activities of daily living due to poor circulation, please feel free to reach out to us for a free consultation at 718-585-5440. Bookworms welcomed

Does anyone remember Levar Burton? He was the host of a famous PBS show that aired on June 6, 1983 called The Reading Rainbow.   On this show; Levar Burton; took you into brief synopses of different books to create interest in reading.  The show included animations to induce even more interest in the books he was showcasing.  Before there was computers, internet, cell phones, and video game consuls; there was reading.  Many people enjoy reading still.  Reading has many advantages.  It increases vocabulary, focus, and imagination.  It also improves problem solving, and it can ward off dementia and delirium. For the next few paragraphs I will attempt to do what Levar Burton did on Reading Rainbow, and give you a brief synopses of three books which are fan favorites here at Harmony Social Adult Day Care.

Honeymoon by James Patterson

The honeymoon is over–now the murders can begin. America’s #1 thriller writer returns with his sexiest, scariest novel ever. Hotter than The Beach House and scarier than Kiss the Girls, James Patterson’s explosive new thriller introduces a bride who is beautiful, talented, devoted–and deadly.

When a young investment banker dies of baffling causes, FBI agent John O’Hara immediately suspects the only witness, the banker’s alluring and mysterious fiancee

Nora Sinclair is a beautiful decorator who expects the best, and will do anything to get it. Agent O’Hara keeps closing in, but the stronger his case, the less he knows whether he’s pursuing justice or his own fatal obsession.

In a novel so compelling it reads like a collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock, James Patterson unveils surprise after surprise that will keep readers guessing until the last deadly kiss.

When the wind blows by James Patterson

Frannie O’Neill is a young and talented veterinarian living in Colorado. Plagued by the mysterious murder of her husband, David, a local doctor, Frannie throws herself into her work. It is not long before another bizarre murder occurs and Kit Harrison, a troubled and unconventional FBI agent, arrives on her doorstep.

Late one night, near the woods of her animal hospital, Frannie stumbles upon a strange, astonishing phenomenon that will change the course of her life forever….

Her name is Max.

With breathtaking energy, eleven-year-old Max leads Frannie and Kit to uncover one of the most diabolical and inhuman plots of modern science. When the Wind Blows is as unique a story as has ever been told, filled with suspense and passion. This is by far James Patterson’s best book to date.

Catcher in the rye JD Salinger

This is one of the most remarkable books published in years. It is the story of sixteen year old Holden Caulfield, who wants desperately to find himself, but who goes underground in New York for forty eight hours when he is overwhelmed by the perplexing circumstances of his life. Read the first page and you will not be able to stop until you have completed this wild and magic adventure with him.

Besides these fantastic reads we have a library full of Spanish and English literature for your reading pleasure.  Why don’t you just stop by and see for yourself? We want to know what your favorite book is, and who your favorite author is.  Join our book club and explore new books together here at Harmony at 154th.  Besides books we offer wide range of activities for you to enjoy. We also offer free breakfast and lunch to all of our participants.  Call us today to schedule your free visit to Harmony at 154th.  Transportation is free.  718-585-5440.

Crochet, Monet, or both

There is no doubt that Harmony at 154th has very talented and creative participants.  We’ve seen all types of handmade creations made by our very own participants.  These creations can be seen on our walls when you come to our center.  Whatever you’re good at doing with your hands we want to see it.  Two of the fan favorites here is crocheting and water painting. Here are a few tips on both types of arts that may help you become a better artisan.

Crochet

  1. 1.       Break for hand and finger stretching: Sometimes you’ll get in the groove and it will be 45 minutes of non-stop crochet. It’s usually paired with a show you may be watching, probably The Steve Wilkos Show or Caso Cerrado! I have found that you need to take quick breaks to stretch your hands and do some finger rolls, otherwise you can get a slight cramp. No fun! I highly suggest you take a mental note to stop for a bit and roll your wrists!
  2. 2.       Watch your posture: As you crochet, you can sit in a sort of recliner chair with your feet propped up. But you may tend to slouch as you get going. Your head is down looking at your work, then up looking at the tv, and your shoulders are now turning into a hunchback! Again, same as #1 and hand stretching, watch for posture and how you’re sitting as you crochet. We don’t need hunchy crocheters out there!!
  3. 3.       Tension matters: Where you position your yarn in your left hand matters. As you pull the yarn through each loop for each stitch with the right hand, you are holding on to the other end with your left hand. It matters how tight or loose you hold that yarn in your left hand and you need to have consistency. Otherwise you’ll get a piece that has 2 rows in the middle that are super tight or super stretched, depending on how tight or loose you were holding the yarn. You’ll start to get into a groove and it will become natural. But just watch for this, it can make your work come out wonky, even if you did the right number of stitches.
  4. 4.       Slow and steady wins the race: Once you get started on a project, you get excited about how it will turn out and start to move too fast. Or perhaps you think you have to get through this project quick because you have 20 other projects you want to complete. You get into a rush. And because of that, you may start to get sloppy, getting into a groove and start going too fast. Try to stick to even, steady stitches, helping with your tension as well, mentioned above.
  5. 5.        Keep a bag or basket by the couch: You should dedicate a crochet basket in your room. You can fill it with current projects, complete with yarn and hooks. You can even place pair of small scissors is in there.  It’s better to keep everything in one spot instead of having everything scattered. The goal is to have it all in one handy spot.
  6. 1.       Watercolors Dry Lighter:  With watercolor paint, a color will always look more intense (stronger and darker) when it is wet. A color will always be lighter and paler when dry.
It’s something you get a feel for through practice and experience. If your paintings look insipid, make the colors more intense by using more paint and less water, or painting another layer of a color over the first.
  7. 2.       Test a color out first: Watercolor paint dries very fast, so test a color on a scrap of paper or on the edge of your painting before using it. That way you’ll know whether it’s the hue and/or tone you’re after.
  8. 3.       Don’t add too much water:  Avoid inadvertently adding more water to your paint after you’ve washed your brush by dabbing the brush onto a dry cloth before putting it in the paint again. If you’ve loaded a brush with paint and decide you needed less paint, hold clean cloth at ferrule end of the brush hairs to soak up some of the excess. Doing it at this end helps keep the pigment at the tip of the brush.
  9. 4.       Water color paint is transparent: Watercolor paint is transparent. You can see through the layers of color you’ve painted, making it near impossible to hide mistakes. Don’t fight against this, but embrace it and work with it.
  10. 5.       Use a decent watercolor brush: Rather have just one, good brush than a handful of cheap ones that splay out and drop hairs. It’ll save you a lot of frustration. A good brush retains its shape so you can get a very fine brush mark from the point; it holds a good quantity of paint so you need to reload it less often.

Painting

I hope this has been helpful to some of you.  The best tip of them all is “Practice makes perfect.” Come practice with us here at Harmony at 154th we have everything you need here.  All you need is your hands.  Call us today for a free one day pass to our center.  We provide more than just crocheting and water painting.  We also offer other activities and nutritious breakfasts and lunches at no cost to you.

The Comfort Zone

Happy New Year Everyone!  We have made it to a new year, and there is nothing stopping us from becoming who we were made to be.  Nothing stopping us but ourselves I should say.  A few months ago I wrote a blog called “What are you afraid of?”  This blog challenged the reader to not be afraid of making new steps in life with the goal of bettering themselves.  Unfortunately, some of you are still scared of what might happen if you stepped out of your comfort zone.  From experience; do you know what makes life worth living?  Taking chances! We take chances every day, and we don’t even realize it.  A simple example is when we eat.  There is a chance that you might choke on cheeseburger you are consuming; yet we still eat it because we hope for the best, and it tastes good.  Other people play the lottery and invest money with the hope of getting rich, or winning a little extra pocket cash.  Chances are a part of life, but it seems like we don’t mind taking chances that bring us satisfaction.  So; let me present you with a chance that will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  Ready?..

Step out of your house.

Many people love staying home.  It is where we feel most comfortable, but if you live by yourself; as I do; you know how lonely it can get in there after a while.  What I do is step out of my house and find something productive to do.  This year flew by for me personally and that is because I kept myself busy.  Sadly many people (in specific the geriatric population) stay confined to their homes.  This is many times a product of depression caused by a loss in the family, or illness.  Many elderly people feel like their life has ended and they are no longer good for anything.  This is NOT true.  Harmony Social Adult Day strives to putting this flat out lie to rest once and for all by proving that life still goes on even in the golden years.  They are called golden years for a reason.  This time should be treasured because it is most valuable.  At Harmony Social Adult Day Care at 154th we want to see you shine like the gold that you are.  We want the latter years to be full of vibrant experiences that can stimulate and awaken the youth in all of us.

You can take many anti-depressive meds that have proven to be effective, but is this how you want to live? Taking anti-depressive meds for the rest of your life is not something you should settle for.  Fight this the natural way, and that is by becoming a participant at Harmony Adult Day Care.  Why Harmony at 154th? Because I strongly believe that our staff is unique.  Our staff has a way of reaching our participants in ways that cannot be obtained through meds alone.  We have noticed a significant change in the overall outlook of life in our participants.  Our interest lies in getting to know you and in giving you an amazing 8 hours a day.  Here at Harmony  health home care bronx at 154th you will meet other people that come from all walks of life, but that have one thing in common and that is that they all have decided to step out of their comfort zones and try out social adult day care.  Programs like Harmony at 154th have proven to change people’s frowns into permanent smiles, so allow us to do the same with you and/or your loved ones.  So take the chance many have already taken, but none have regretted.  Come to Harmony Social Adult Day Care. We believe that one day with us will kick off a change within you for a better, happier you.  Call us today and fill your new year with laughter and smiles.

At Harmony Social Adult Day Care, we believe everyone’s health is important, which is why we have all of our Certified Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides, and staff trained efficiently, so that you or your loved ones are getting the right health professionals providing safe care at our facility. Deck the halls with boughs of Harmony

Everyone’s favorite season is right around the corner.  A season packed with incandescent lights, sugar cookies, warm peppermint lattes, Christmas trees, and of course gifts! Who doesn’t love Christmas?! Christmas is more than just material goods, but more importantly it’s a time for family to come together and enjoy quality time with each other.  During this time people all over the world fly, drive, or take other forms of transportation to see their families.  Family should be the most important thing in our lives.  Unfortunately there are many people that don’t have anyone to share this season with.  There are many reasons for this. Both the family member lives too far and the resources to travel are not available; or sadly to say; many family members are neglected and forgotten about.  Luckily we’re here to deck the halls with boughs of Harmony.

We here at Harmony at 154th street celebrate all major holidays including Christmas.  We are your family away from family.  This past thanksgiving we had a pot luck dinner with some of our participants.  Needless to say the food was superb! Honestly my thanksgiving at Harmony was better than my own at home.  View the pictures below.  A few of our participants came to me personally and thanked me and Harmony for putting together this lunch the day after Thanksgiving because they themselves did not have family to spend thanksgiving with this year.  These testimonials have warmed our hearts, because we honestly go above and beyond to treat all of our participants like nothing less than family.

We love our participants because we know how different and unique they all are.  Here at Harmony at 154th all these characters from all walks of life come together in perfect Harmony.  Those without family nearby have found a family with us.  At the same time those with a loving caring family have entrusted our staff with the care of their loved ones. This is beneficial for the participant and for the care provider. It is beneficial for the participant, because they will enjoy a day full of activities that serve the purpose of stimulating the mind and body.  These activities include daily exercise, musical entertainment, bingo, chess, pool, and so much more.  We also provide warm nutritious meals for breakfast and lunch. This is beneficial for the care provider as well because while the loved one is at the center they can attend to other responsibilities, or just enjoy some respite from daily care responsibilities.

Join us this holiday season, and be part of more than just a center… be part of our family.  You can schedule your visit with us by calling 718-585-5440.  We are here Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm.  Call today!
